How Rose Isling-Ellis Will Listen To Her Music On Strictly Come Dancing.

Key Sentence:

  • Strictly Come Dancing welcomes its first deaf competitor of the year - EastEnders star Rose Eiling-Ellis.
  • The 26-year-old plays Frankie Lewis, the daughter of Mick Carter (Danny Dyer), in the One soap opera starting in May 2020.

His casting in Strictly understandably left some viewers wondering how a deaf candidate could attend the show based on listening to live music and Dancing on time. But Eiling-Ellis hopes this is the perfect opportunity to show others how deaf people experience music and question assumptions.

"A lot of people that deaf people can't listen to music, enjoy music, and like to dance, so I thought it would be a good platform for me to break that stereotype," he explained.

Eiling-Ellis has been linked with her professional partner at the launch of Strictly 2021, which airs on One this Saturday (18 September).

Eiling-Ellis' casting on the show was lauded for being inclusive, but some viewers wanted to know how it worked in practice. The actress told News: "A common misconception is that deaf people cannot enjoy music. "I have a hearing aid, so I picked up some music and heard the beat. I heard someone singing, but I couldn't see the right words. I also felt the vibrations."

In Strictly's case, the vibe of the live band, led by Dave Arch, can be felt through the large dance floor at Elstree's show studio. The Eastenders star added that he could use his professional partner as a guide to follow in his footsteps. "I'll focus on reading my partner's body language and doing the math in my head, which will help me out over time," she says.

"However," she emphasizes, "not all deaf people are created equal; every deaf person will have their own unique experience with music. I love music, and I can't wait to learn to dance professionally at Strictly!" Sarah James, the Executive Producer of Strictly, said that the production staff would stay in touch with the actress to find out her practical and logistical needs.

"The team and I learned a lot from Rose," said James. "He's a fantastic person; he's also candid about what he needs and what we need to adjust, so the conversation continues. "The whole team did brilliant deaf awareness training, and we learned sign language, and that was brilliant too."

James noted, "Of course, Rose will always need an interpreter, so she will always have an interpreter for training. And then you can see an interpreter with him in front of the camera on the show. He, of course, needed someone to interpret the comments: the judge and his conversation with Claudia [Winkleman]. "But I also know Rose is looking forward to the show, and I can't wait to see what she does."
